How to Draw Printemps, Step by Step
Printemps (French for springtime) is a packed field of tight spirals. Each spiral winds out from the center and is closed by one loop around the outside, so it looks like a little rolled-up spring.
Step 1 of 4
Start in the middle of a spiral and wind outward two or three turns, then close it with one loop around the outside.
Watch it draw stroke by stroke, pause on any step, then try it yourself on paper.
Printemps step by step
- Step 1
Start in the middle of a spiral and wind outward two or three turns, then close it with one loop around the outside.
- Step 2
Add more spirals of different sizes, letting them touch but not overlap.
- Step 3
Fill the spaces between them with smaller spirals.
- Step 4
Squeeze the tiniest spirals into the last gaps until the area looks full.
Tips for a neat Printemps
- Draw slowly: the inner turns are where most spirals go wrong.
- Vary the sizes on purpose; a mix of big and small looks livelier than identical spirals.
- It is fine to let spirals run off the edge of the section.
Variations to try
- Shade the gaps between spirals with pencil for depth.
- Fill the gaps solid black so the spirals pop out.
